Senior AI Research Scientist — Sensor Data / Robotics

Archetype AI is hiring a Senior AI Research Scientist as a backfill for Jamie. You will join the core research team and work on machine learning systems for real-world physical environments. The company has raised a Series A, has customers, and its technology is already deployed in production.

This is a research-heavy role focused on sensor data and other non-image modalities. You will develop models that perform reliably in real-world settings and work closely with research and engineering teams to move ideas from experimentation into deployment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead research projects from problem definition through experimentation and deployment.
  • Develop ML models for sensor data and other physical-world signals.
  • Investigate representation learning, self-supervised learning, and unsupervised learning approaches.
  • Adapt existing models to new data and changing real-world conditions.
  • Work with the core research and engineering teams to move research into production.
  • Communicate research decisions, findings, and trade-offs clearly across the company.

Requirements:

  • 5–8 years of experience in AI/ML research, or equivalent depth of experience.
  • Strong experience working with sensor data or other non-image data.
  • Experience in robotics, audio, or another physical-world ML domain.
  • A track record of taking research beyond papers and into practical systems.
  • The initiative and autonomy to lead a research direction independently.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain research clearly to collaborators.
  • Industry experience is preferred, though strong candidates from research labs or academia will also be considered.

Nice to have:

  • Representation learning.
  • Self-supervised or unsupervised learning.
  • Model adaptation or domain adaptation, especially adapting models to new data after deployment.
  • Experience with LLMs alongside strong experience in sensor data, robotics, audio, or another physical domain.
  • Experience at a strong research-driven technology company.

This role is not a fit for candidates whose experience is primarily with image data or LLMs without experience in sensor data, robotics, audio, or another physical-world domain.

Location: Bay Area preferred, with an expectation of working from the office 2–3 days per week. Open to candidates elsewhere in the United States or Canada, including Texas. Europe is not eligible for this role, including France.

Compensation: $200,000–$240,000 USD annually. Compensation will be reviewed after the initial three-month period based on performance and scope.
